The McDonald's recall of 12 million drinking glasses with high levels of cadmium shows the need for a "more systematic approach" to chemical regulation, according to Richard Denison, an expert at the Environmental Defense Fund. After Congress tightened lead-testing rules for children's products in 2008, some Chinese manufacturers switched to cadmium because it wasn't covered by the regulations, Denison said.
