A green roof is under construction at the Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia to help conserve energy. The plant-covered roof will provide a habitat for birds and other small animals. The Navy says the project can help demonstrate the value of microhabitats in urban areas as well as military installations. Green roofs can make buildings "more self-sustaining" and less dependent upon the energy grid, said Capt. Kelly Johnson, commanding officer at the station.
