There is mixed research to support the notion that merit pay for teachers helps improve educational outcomes for students, Harvard University economics professor Edward L. Glaeser writes in this blog post. Glaeser believes that the federal Race to the Top program is right to push the issue as a way to create discussion about incentives, but he suggests that student test scores might be better used to help administrators retain the best teachers or dismiss the weak ones.
