States should and teachers should welcome national academic standards released last week, former Los Angeles teacher Walter Gardner writes in this blog post. Gardner argues that the standards, written by subject experts, incorporate much of the content that teachers in the same field agree upon and place it into a concrete blueprint detailing what students need to know. At the same time, the standards still gives teachers the freedom to decide what to teach and how to teach it, Gardner writes.
