Since retiring in 2005, plastic surgeon Dr. Phil Metz has spent a few weeks each year or so in Afghanistan and Uganda, repairing cleft palates and teaching the technique to local doctors. "Fixing cleft lips is probably the most fun thing you can do," Metz said. "Because you put a smile not only on the face of that child, but on his mother, his father, on all the people in that family."
