Scientists at Yale University said they were able to rebuild a rat's lung that worked for up to two hours when transplanted back into the animal and proved to be 95% as efficient as natural lungs in exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide. They engineered the lung by removing all the living cells and then injecting newborn rat-derived lung cells into the organ's scaffolding while inside a bioreactor. The lead researcher said it could be 20 or 25 years before such a technique could be used in humans.
