A $27 million liability cap sought by Transocean in connection with the Gulf oil spill wouldn't apply to state and federal claims, the company's lead attorney says. The company is trying to use a 159-year-old maritime law to limit its legal liability to the value of the Deepwater Horizon rig's unpaid rental fees, but the Justice Department argued that the statute didn't affect governments' ability to pursue the company "for pollution response costs, environmental damages and other injuries."
