The Government Accountability Office and the Veterans Affairs' Office of Inspector General will conduct separate investigations into safety issues at the John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo., that led to the possible exposure of 1,812 veterans to infectious diseases, such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. Of the veterans notified of the risk, 1,144 have been screened for possible infection and 809 had negative results, said a spokeswoman for one of the representatives who called for the probe. The Department of Veterans Affairs has not yet released information on whether any of the other veterans have tested positive, the spokeswoman said.
