Success could change the business model of China's large, state-backed banks, according to The Economist. If China shifts to a more consumption-oriented economy and smoothly digests a recent expansion in lending, financing needs for state companies and big infrastructure projects will move to the bond market and banks will need to expand lending to small businesses and individuals. "China's banks could then end up looking a lot like banks elsewhere, although the state will still have control," The Economist notes.
