Besides being filthy, Chicago's waterways are gradually draining Lake Michigan and providing a shortcut for invasive species that could wreak havoc on the Great Lakes' ecosystems. The Army Corps of Engineers has been asked to find solutions, but so far has focused on short-term concepts such as using underwater sound-and-light displays to deter invasive fish. Environmental advocates want the Corps to think bigger and figure out ways to entirely re-plumb the Windy City.
