Total Petrochemicals' methanol-to-olefins pilot plant in Belgium, which has been producing light olefins ethylene and propylene each day from about 10 metric tons of methanol, showcases how plastics can be manufactured from bio-based methane. "This technology gives petrochemical producers new, viable alternatives to the use of petroleum by enabling the use of methanol derived from sources such as natural gas, coal or biomass," according to a statement from technology developer UOP.
