Scientists at California-based Codexis have developed biotech enzymes that can boost by a factor of 100 the efficiency of a solvent in capturing and storing carbon dioxide. Called carbonic anhydrase, the modified enzymes can limit the increase in electricity costs of a coal plant to 35% or less and operate in a smokestack at temperatures higher than 85 degrees Celsius for a half-hour.
