The Clean Fuels Development Coalition, or CFDC, is calling on lawmakers to consider ethanol's contributions when formulating biofuel policies, said Douglas A. Durante, the group's executive director. "Thanks in part to corn-based ethanol, U.S. oil import dependence peaked in 2007, and is expected to decline further until 2035," Jeff Bingaman, D-Minn., chairman of the Senate Energy Committee, said in a report that Durante cited. However, policymakers need to ensure that tax incentives for ethanol go hand in hand with efforts to expand its market share, Durante said.
