Chipotle Mexican Grill retrofitted its stores several years ago to allow complete access to customers in wheelchairs, company officials said. The announcement came after a U.S. appeals court ruled this week that the chain's high counters denied a customer full access to the "Chipotle experience" from his wheelchair on two occasions in 2005. "The matter is largely moot because, several years ago -- independent of this lawsuit -- we retrofitted all of our California restaurants with a new counter design that eliminates any concern regarding wheelchair accessibility," said spokesman Chris Arnold.
