Union workers at the Just Born factory in Bethlehem, Pa., have reached a three-year agreement with the candy maker. The deal, which covers 337 workers, "allows us to continue making candy, and it's a win-win situation for both sides," said a Just Born spokeswoman.
A report from the Global Packaging Project says companies reducing the amount of packaging they use can do more environmental harm than good if products are damaged because the packages are not substantial enough. The report offers guidelines for creating the most sustainable packaging.
British confectioner Simpkins is preparing to roll out new flavors and expand production after winning candy deals in Japan and South America. New flavors on tap include passion fruit, lime and coffee. The company is planning to invest in new machinery that will produce smaller tins for the Japanese market.
The annual NCA Resident Course in Confectionery Technology will include instruction in making sugar-free confections. The event, known as "Candy School," is scheduled for July 26 to Aug. 6 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
