The Department of Energy is pouring $122 million into an effort to develop "artificial photosynthesis" -- a technique that could one day allow researchers to use solar energy to produce liquid fuels. Using nanotechnologies, scientists say, it's theoretically possible to mimic plants' energy-harvesting processes to turn the sun's rays into fuel that could be poured straight into a car's gas tank.
