Michigan retailers are experiencing a turnaround, but the state's retail industry is still facing challenges such as high vacancies lingering after the departure of big-box stores, according to speakers at the International Council of Shopping Centers' state convention. Some retail operators are rising to meet this challenge by wooing unorthodox tenants such as medical operations. "If you can figure out how to get your rent, then you're on first base," says Tom Litzler, a development executive at Ramco Gershenson Properties Trust.
