Last week's notorious TIME magazine article, "Twenty Reasons to Hate Airlines," comes on the heels of growing political criticism of airline deregulation. Lawmakers have blasted mergers, ancillary fees and other practices, threatening to re-regulate the industry in order to solve the perceived "problems." But airline executives respond that fares are low, competition is fierce and profits are hard to come by. The industry has seen 186 bankruptcies in three decades, United Airlines CEO Glenn Tilton notes.
