ARM Holdings has introduced the CoreLink CCN-508 design for use in networking chips. The CoreLink CCN-508's architecture can support up to 32 64-bit ARMv8 cores, according to the IC design firm. Meanwhile, the smartphone market's race to embrace eight-core processors may be overdone, according to ARM's James Bruce. He suggests a six-core design with ARM technology could do the work of an eight-core processor, while saving on chip space.
MediaTek is developing a smartphone chipset, the MT6591, that will boast six processing cores, according to a product roadmap posted on Weibo, which is similar to Twitter in China. The chipset is expected to run as fast as 1.5 gigahertz and be introduced in this quarter, the roadmap indicates. The news comes just after Samsung Electronics introduced a six-core chipset, the Exynos 5260, this week.
