With billions in federal high-speed rail funds on the table, Japan is stepping up its efforts to win contracts to build and supply systems for bullet trains. Japan officials are planning to visit California in early 2011 as the state prepares to set up an 800-mile system. Last month in Chicago, Japanese Transport Minister Seiji Maehara said, "I hope to form strong partnerships with not only the state governments but also with Amtrak."
