Egg producer Maine Contract Farming has found that changes mandated as part of a state settlement over allegations of animal cruelty are resulting in healthier birds. The settlement required the producer to improve staff training and retain a veterinarian to care for the chickens. Georgia veterinarian Charles Hofacre and South Carolina entomologist Maxcy Nolan III designed the new program, which included a more balanced diet, an improved vaccination regimen and better pest control.
