Even though Itta Bena, Miss., is home to fertile Mississippi Delta soil used to grow varieties of fresh produce, a USDA study in Leflore County found that it's a food desert. There are about 12,000 low-income households that are located more than a mile from a grocery store, and Wal-Mart [the nearest source to fresh food] is about seven miles away from Itta Bena.
