Yildiz Holding, the Turkey-based owner of Godiva chocolates, has agreed to buy U.S.-based DeMet's Candy Co. from buyout company Brynwood Partners for $221 million. DeMet's makes Turtles covered nut clusters and Flipz chocolate pretzels. DeMet's operates facilities in New York and Pennsylvania.
School meals are more popular than ever in one New York district since nutrition professionals began serving made-from-scratch meals. "These students are our future and to educate them, you have to have a good food service program for them. If they're not getting healthy good food, their minds aren't working," said district chef Jerry Carr.
DeMet's Candy Co. plans to open a facility in Big Flats, N.Y., according to reports. The company makes Turtles chocolate pecan clusters and Flipz candy- and yogurt-covered pretzels. The company declined to comment on the deal.
A planning board in Big Flats, N.Y., has approved plans to build a candy factory in the area that would be completed by the summer. The name of the candy manufacturer was not disclosed, but the company is estimated to bring about 100 full-time jobs to the area.
