Some small-business owners are seeking the relative safety of a national brand by converting to franchises. The move can provide brand recognition, management tools and marketing help, but they warn that business owners must be willing to invest in the business and meet company standards. "There's no question the business wouldn't be where it is today without converting," said one business owner who folded his small shop into a national chain with a $100,000 investment.
