Teachers are participating in professional-development opportunities less often, according to an analysis of federal data released by the National Staff Development Council. The study found a decline in professional development lasting between nine to 16 hours, while training of up to eight hours increased. That may be a signal that the use of "one-shot workshops" has increased, according to the report. However, the study found an increased focus on support for new teachers. In 2008, 78% received support from a mentor -- an increase from 62% in 2000.
