The nation's two largest carriers have reportedly tapped Minneapolis, Salt Lake City and Austin, Texas, as test sites for their system -- dubbed "Mercury" -- that is aimed at replacing credit cards with a smartphone payments system. AT&T and Verizon Wireless, which are also partnering with T-Mobile USA in the venture, have opted to begin the trials in mid-2011 with Atlanta as a possible fourth site, according to a published report.
