Airfares have been increasing steadily since the beginning of the year, according to official data. But airlines adding fees for services such as checking luggage makes comparisons of past and present airfares increasingly difficult. While these extra fees have increased, the total cost of a one-way fare has not, according to an ATA spokesperson, "From 2000 to 2009, even when you figure in ancillary fees, we're only showing an increase of four-tenths of 1 percent for an average one-way fare."
