Researchers have discovered a gene, NDM-1, that allows some bacteria to produce a chemical that gives them antibiotic resistance, according to a study published in Lancet Infectious Diseases. The gene is present in typical gut bacteria and can jump to other bacteria in the digestive tract. Doctors discovered the superbugs in 180 patient samples from Pakistan and India, and in samples in the U.K. and U.S. from patients who had had surgery in India.
