FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said the egg farms behind a growing nationwide egg recall "were not operating with the standards of practice we consider responsible." The recall began with Wright County Egg and has expanded to Hillandale Farms, both of Iowa, after a salmonella outbreak that sickened hundreds of people.
Speakers at the recent Sustainable Agricultural Partnerships conference included small farmers and representatives of large corporations, all focused on improving sustainability in the U.S. food supply. The issue is complex, partly because companies in competition must exchange information and develop a common language for measuring sustainability. Shoppers Food & Pharmacy is moving its corporate offices within Maryland, from Lanham to Bowie. The grocery chain, with more than 60 stores in the Baltimore-Washington region, will move to a 25,000-square-foot space in a business park under development.
A salmonella outbreak that started in May and has since made hundreds of people sick nationwide has been linked to Wright County Egg in Iowa, which is recalling an estimated 228 million eggs. The eggs are sold under the brand names Lucerne, Farm Fresh, Albertson and a number of others.
