There has been debate in Minnesota over the use of English as the official language. Regardless of what the official language is, many non-English speakers say they are trying to learn the language as a gateway to a better life. In 2008-09, 32,000 people in Minnesota took a course in English as a Second Language, and some learning centers report that the number of people seeking such courses is strong.
