A veterinarian in Watertown, N.Y., reported that five to six horses in St. Lawrence County in recent weeks have been diagnosed with Potomac horse fever, a fatal gastrointestinal disease indicated by depression, rapid weight loss and other clinical signs. A vaccine is available to protect horses from potentially contracting the disease, which was detected in St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties in 2001 and 2004.
