The Federal Aviation Administration has ordered fixes for nearly 100 Boeing 747s to ensure that a mechanical glitch does not cause the aircraft to lose lift during takeoff. The agency says wiring problems can cause wing flaps to retract without being ordered to do so, potentially causing "reduced climb performance and consequent collision with terrain and obstacles." Boeing this year called on airlines to voluntarily fix the wiring issue, but the FAA's directive will make it mandatory. Regulators in Europe and elsewhere are expected to follow the FAA's lead.
