Groups advocating the rights of men who have sex with men have expressed disappointment at an FDA advisory committee's recent decision to support retaining the lifetime blood-donation ban on MSM. The groups, however, are pinning their hopes on a statement made by the committee that the policy is "suboptimal" and more studies need to be undertaken to provide support for improving it. Although the FDA is not obligated to follow the committee's advice, it generally does, said Shelly Burgess, an FDA spokeswoman.
