Recent surveys have found that 56% of Americans have taken on extra work responsibilities during the past two years because of staff reductions, leading to higher labor productivity but lower employee morale. Although half of all workers plan to look for new jobs once the economy improves, experts say many are thankful just to have a job. "The overriding feeling is [that] whatever's happening to them, they are not on the other side of that fence," says consultant David Bowles.
