Almost 200,000 dogs were put down in Bali, Indonesia, after a 40-year-old woman died of rabies last week and at least 30,000 dog bite incidents were reported in the area in the first half of 2010. Officials say they opted for euthanasia because a mass vaccination program was difficult to start. "Culturally, it is difficult to convince people that dogs can carry disease," one official said.
