U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey White in San Francisco overturned the Department of Agriculture's approval of biotech sugar beet cultivation, saying that the agency did not conduct an environmental-impact assessment before making its decision. A spokesman for the USDA said the agency is reviewing the ruling "to figure out what's appropriate as the next step." The effects will be apparent during next spring's planting season as crops now in the ground can be made into sugar.
