Over the next few years, Maryland's schools will benefit from $250 million in Race to the Top funds and another $179 million from the federal education-jobs bill. Officials say they will use the money to improve teaching and to purchase more school technology. Some of the Race to the Top money will go to develop a student-data system to track student achievement from kindergarten -- all the way through college for those students who choose in-state higher education.
