A survey of 1,900 pet owners in Indiana indicated that while most of the respondents treat their pets like their own children, they were less likely to retain that attitude after having children come into their lives. "In all cases for dogs and cats, except for cats going to the vet, children adversely affected the animals. ... People with children spent less time with their animals and took them to the vet less often," the study's author said.
