In East Providence, R.I., schools have eliminated traditional recess for elementary-school students, replacing the 10-minute recess break with in-class stretching and other supervised programs. School officials say the change will benefit students, but some parents and teachers disagree. "It's very difficult for kids to stay stationary for all that time," one teacher said. "And a little bit of unstructured time and freedom to socialize, let their hair down, make friends ... It's healthy."
