Illinois language-arts teacher Shannon Arko has adopted a student-directed teaching style that allows middle-school students to read books that interest them. On the first day of school, she asks her students to make a list of the books they like to read, and their homework throughout the year will be to read a book of their choosing for about 20 minutes each day. The teaching method is intended to improve reading skills and raise test scores.
