U.S. researchers studied more than 513,000 women and their babies and found that those women who gained at least 53 pounds while they were pregnant gave birth to babies who were slightly heavier than those of women who gained 22 pounds, which may put the children at risk for obesity later in life. "If mothers are not careful, they could in some way program their children to be obese or diabetic before they are even born," a nutrition expert said.
