Although the Labor Department recently reported a slight uptick in construction jobs, the industry is taking those gains with a grain of salt. Because the increase is largely based on federally funded projects, the improvement isn't built to last, experts say. "There are few signs of life in privately funded construction, and state and local budget deficit projections are forcing further cuts in non-stimulus public projects," said Ken Simonson, chief economist at the Associated General Contractors of America.
