Transportation Security Administration Director John Pistole told agents this week that full-body scanners are a necessary component for improving security at U.S. airports. The technology can help detect non-metallic devices, such as the explosives carried by a Nigerian man who attempted to sabotage a U.S.-bound flight in December 2009, he said. Concerns about travelers' privacy would be mitigated by TSA policies forbidding the storage of images and the making of digital copies by employees, he said.
