The Justice Department said Friday it has no major antitrust concerns in the proposed merger between United Airlines and Continental Airlines, clearing the way for the creation of the world's largest carrier. "The completion of DOJ's review is an important step on our journey of creating the world's leading airline, benefiting our customers, co-workers, communities and stockholders," Continental CEO Jeff Smisek said in a statement. The airlines hope to close the deal by Oct. 1, pending a vote by shareholders next month and final approval by the Department of Transportation.
