The Obama administration stepped up its effort to help unemployed workers avoid losing their homes through foreclosure with a $1 billion loan program. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will provide as much as $50,000 in an interest-free loan to help jobless workers cover their mortgage payments, insurance bills and taxes. The Treasury Department will put $2 billion into an existing program that helps homeowners at risk of foreclosure in 17 states and the District of Columbia.
