The Army Corps of Engineers is developing a plan for upgrading the levees and other structures that provide flood protection to New Orleans and surrounding areas. While details of the plan have yet to be announced, agency filings show that the projects are likely to focus on using deep-soil-mixing techniques to improve flood-protection structures. The agency is also installing 11 flood pumps in a 500-foot-long complex that will be capable of pumping 143,000 gallons per second once it is complete.
