Nubians living between A.D. 250 and 500 in Sudan consumed tetracycline, an antibiotic, likely through a type of beer, researchers have determined. That would predate the 1928 discovery of penicillin by more than 1,000 years. "I'm convinced that they had the science of fermentation under control and were purposely producing the drug," chemist Mark Nelson said.
