Fuel-efficient aircraft are the airline industry's best hope for consistent profit, said Gary Scott, president of Bombardier's commercial-aircraft unit. Scott said at an aviation conference that airlines are "struggling just to reach 2% of revenue" in earnings, a situation that is "not sustainable." Bombardier's upcoming CSeries jet, which claims 20% less fuel burn than competing models, is one example of the kind of fleet optimization that "will drive airline profitability through cost savings and revenue growth, and help enable new business models," Scott said.
