The government will not likely maintain its deepwater-drilling moratorium beyond the Nov. 30 deadline, but whether it is lifted early will rely on the industry's compliance with existing and upcoming safety practices, said Michael Bromwich, director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement. While the government acknowledges the moratorium's effects on drilling-dependent communities along the Gulf Coast, it is also concerned about the consequences of the BP rig blast and oil spill, he added.
