The private equity firm that bought Church's Chicken was dismayed to find that consumers ranked the company's restaurants at the bottom of a list of popular quickservice chains. Since then, CEO Mel Deane has led a turnaround effort that has improved service and store conditions enough to move Church's eateries into the "above average" category. The strategy included raising manager pay, expanding R&D efforts and creating an online consumer panel to seek feedback.
